In choosing an area rug, the first consideration should be to buy a rug you love. Rugs are like works of art, to be cherished for their beauty and craftsmanship. Size should be the next choice. Standard sizes for area rugs are 6 x 9, 8 x 10, 9 x 12 and 10 x 14, but we can also custom size any rug. While opinions differ on what size rug for a living room, we think bigger is better. Keeping the furniture entirely on the rug grounds the space and makes it appear larger. If that is not possible then end the rug halfway under the furniture. If you are purchasing a rug for a dining room, a standard size 8 x 10 or 9 x 12 will work. A rule of thumb is to choose a rug size that is a minimum of 2' larger than the table all around. Lastly, rug construction and fiber are important considerations in picking a rug that's right for your room. Hand-knotted oriental area rugs are extremely durable and considered the most luxurious, but are also the most expensive. Hand-tufted rugs are very popular and are available in a wide range of patterns, colors and sizes, but vary greatly in quality. When it comes to fiber, wool is the best choice for many reasons as outlined here. Viscose is also a popular yarn used in rug-making today due to its silk-like sheen, but must be professionally cleaned. Jute, sisal and other natural fiber rugs are also options to consider for an all natural look.
