Custom Sized Rugs from Broadloom Carpet: A Designer's Guide to Perfect Proportions

7 min read

In interior design, proportion is key, and the rug plays a big role in creating that perfect balance. While standard rug sizes like 6 x 9, 8 x 10, and 9 x 12 can fit many spaces, they don’t always work for every room. Using the wrong-sized rug can create awkward gaps or cause furniture to overlap in ways that disrupt the overall look of the room.

A thoughtfully chosen rug does so much more than define a seating area; it sets the tone, balances the room’s architecture, and ties everything together. However, if your space has unique features like curved staircases or angled corners, finding the right rug size can be tricky with standard options.

That’s where custom-sized rugs come in! We specialize in creating custom-sized rugs from broadloom carpet that fit your space perfectly. No more forcing your room to fit a standard size — whether you need a unique shape or a particular size, we can design a carpet that seamlessly enhances your interior design.

What Is a Custom Sized Rug?

A custom sized rug is made from broadloom carpet and fabricated to the dimensions you need rather than being limited to conventional area-rug sizes.

A rectangle is the most common shape, but that's only the beginning. Depending on the space, a broadloom carpet can be fabricated into a:

  • Rectangle

  • Round or oval rug

  • Angled shape

  • Irregular shape

  • Rug with a fireplace cutout

  • Rug with a bay-window cutout

  • Shape designed around architectural features

  • Custom shape that follows the contours of a room

This flexibility makes broadloom particularly useful in rooms where a conventional area rug simply doesn't work.

When the Shape of the Room Calls for a Custom Rug

In this installation, we custom cut the carpet to follow the curve of a stairway balustrade, creating a precise fit while allowing the hardwood flooring to remain visible.

Some spaces are easy to furnish with a rectangular rug. Others aren't.

The photograph above is a good example of this approach. The carpet follows the curved edge of the stair opening, creating a soft transition between the carpeted area and the exposed hardwood.

Rather than trying to find a rug that happens to fit the space, the carpet is made to fit the space.

An open room may have a curved staircase or railing that interrupts the floor. A bay window may create an unusual corner. A fireplace may require a portion of the rug to be cut away. Or an older home may have walls and architectural details that don't conform to today's standard rug dimensions.

That's where shape-to-fit carpet or rugs can be especially useful.

For a shape-to-fit installation, the carpet is cut to follow the contours of the space, often leaving a border of wood flooring visible around the perimeter. This creates a finished, intentional look while allowing the carpet to follow the architecture rather than forcing the room to accommodate a rectangular rug.

Designed Around the Architecture

Custom-cut carpet seamlessly fits the bay window alcove in our client's New England home, enhancing its architectural charm with a tailored finish.

We also frequently create custom cuts around fireplaces, bay windows, angled corners, and other architectural features.

And there is no predetermined shape that a custom rug must follow. When necessary, our installation team can cut and bind carpet on site to achieve a precise fit.

Why Choose Broadloom for a Custom Rug?

There are several reasons homeowners and designers choose broadloom carpet when they need a custom-size rug.

1. More Flexible Sizes

An oversized rectangular rug made from broadloom carpet can provide the scale needed to properly anchor a large entryway.

Ready-made area rugs are generally available in a limited selection of standard dimensions. Custom-made rugs eliminate those limitations, but ordering a handmade rug in a special size can require a significant amount of time.

Broadloom provides another option.

Many of our carpets can be fabricated into rugs up to 15 feet wide without a seam. Larger rugs can also be created by seaming the carpet when necessary.

This makes broadloom especially useful for large living rooms, family rooms, open spaces, and other areas where a standard 8' x 10' or 9' x 12' rug may simply be too small.

2. Virtually Any Shape

A custom rug doesn't have to follow the shape of an unusual room. Sometimes the design calls for something as simple—and distinctive—as a round or oval rug.

A custom broadloom rug doesn't have to be a rectangle.

Round and oval rugs are possibilities, as are more complicated shapes designed around the architecture of a room.

For particularly complex spaces, we can fabricate the carpet on site, allowing the finished piece to follow the exact contours of the floor.

3. More Carpet Choices

One of the advantages of shopping for a custom rug at K. Powers is the opportunity to select from the thousands of carpet samples available in our showroom.

Wool and wool-blend carpets are particularly popular for custom rugs. Stripes and geometrics are also excellent choices because their patterns can become an important part of the design.

Large carpet samples can be taken home to see how the color, texture, and pattern look with your furnishings and in your home's natural light.

That can be especially helpful when you're trying to coordinate a rug with existing flooring, upholstery, paint colors, or other finishes.

4. A Custom Rug Can Be More Accessible Than a Custom Handmade Rug

A custom handmade rug can be a wonderful investment when you're looking for something truly special and are willing to wait for a one-of-a-kind piece.

But it isn't always necessary.

A broadloom carpet fabricated to a custom size can provide the look and feel you want at a lower cost, while also offering considerably more flexibility in size and shape.

For some rooms, that makes a custom broadloom rug a practical alternative to ordering a rug specifically woven to size.

Choosing the Right Edge Finish

Once the carpet has been cut to size, the edges need to be finished.

At K. Powers & Company, our custom rugs are fabricated in-house. The carpet is laid out on a large worktable, where the edges are finished using a table binder.

Depending on the carpet and the look you're trying to achieve, options include:

  • Narrow binding for a clean, understated edge

  • Wool serging for a classic, tailored finish

  • Decorative tape for a more distinctive border

The edge treatment can subtly change the character of the finished rug, so it is worth considering alongside the carpet itself.

From One Custom Rug to an Entire Coordinated Look

Stanton Carpet's Hanna in Soft Orchid elegantly complements the entryway with a stair runner and custom-sized area rug, creating a cohesive and sophisticated look.

A custom sized rug doesn't have to stand alone.

One of the benefits of working with broadloom carpet is the ability to use the same carpet in several areas of a home.

For example, you might choose one wool carpet for:

  • A custom area rug in the living room

  • A coordinating stair runner

  • A custom runner in a hallway

  • A shape-to-fit rug in an upper hall

We've also created custom shape-to-fit rugs for upper halls that coordinate with stair runners, creating a cohesive transition from one level of the home to another.

This can be particularly effective with stripes, geometrics, and other patterned carpets.

Custom Sized Rugs for Unusual Spaces

A shape-to-fit carpet can be precisely cut around the angles of a hallway, no matter how complex the architecture.

Some of our favorite custom rug projects are the ones that don't fit neatly into a standard category:

A complicated hallway may require several angled cuts.

A curved staircase may call for a curved edge.

A fireplace may require a precise cutout.

A bay window may change the shape of the room.

And a large open living space may simply need a rug larger than anything available off the shelf.

In each case, the goal is the same: create a rug that works with the space rather than forcing the space to work around the rug.

How the Custom Rug Process Works

Creating a custom sized rug at K. Powers & Company begins with selecting the carpet.

With thousands of carpet samples in our showroom, our design consultants are experts in helping you narrow the choices based on color, pattern, texture, fiber, and how the rug will be used in your home.

Once the carpet has been selected, our installation manager professionally measures the room or space.

For a standard rectangular rug, the process may be relatively straightforward. For a more complicated shape, careful measuring and planning are especially important.

The carpet is then cut and fabricated in-house, with the appropriate edge treatment applied to the perimeter.

For particularly complex spaces, the carpet may be cut and bound on site to ensure that the finished rug fits the space precisely. The result is a rug made specifically for your room—not a standard rug selected because it was the closest available size.

When Is a Custom Broadloom Rug the Right Choice?

A custom sized rug from broadloom can be an excellent option when:

You need an unusual size. Your room requires something larger or smaller than conventional area-rug dimensions.

You need a specific shape. The room includes curves, angles, architectural features, or other obstacles.

You want to coordinate several areas. You'd like the same carpet on a stairway, hallway, and area rug.

You want more design options. You'd like to choose from a broad selection of wool, wool-blend, striped, geometric, and textured carpets.

You don't want to wait months for a custom-made rug.A broadloom carpet can provide a custom look without the extended production time associated with some made-to-order rugs.

You want a custom rug without the investment of a handmade rug.Broadloom fabrication offers another way to achieve a custom result at a more accessible price point.
